The majority of burglaries in the UK happen between October and January, so as the nights get darker it’s time to make your home safe and secure.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that there are 35% more home insurance claims during the winter with thieves using the cover of darkness to hide and break in unnoticed.

Here are our top security tips to protect your home this winter.

Lock all your doors and windows

Opportunistic burglaries can be easily prevented if homeowners are diligent with their security. Each time you go out double check and make sure all windows and doors are locked, including above-ground windows.

For maximum protection fit your doors and windows with anti-snap, anti-pick, and anti-drill locks, especially if you have conservatory or French doors which are prime targets for criminals.

    Use time switches for lights

To many burglars, a dark house is an empty house. If you are travelling or arriving home late from work, invest in some timer switches to turn on your lights so it looks like somebody is home.

    Keep curtains and blinds drawn

Keep blinds and curtains drawn as much as possible to avoid giving thieves a clear view through your windows. Leaving them open gives criminals the opportunity to study the layout of your house and spot any valuables left in sight.

    Invest in an alarm system

Burglars prey on targets that allow them to go unnoticed. Studies have shown that approximately 60% of burglars would find an alternative target if they saw a house had an alarm, and a further 50% said they would leave a house if they realised an alarm system was present after they’d entered a home.

Don’t hide keys outside your home

Some people still leave keys to their homes hidden under flowerpots outside, essentially leaving the door wide open for would-be burglars. If you need to leave a key at home, we recommend installing a high-quality key safe to store your keys or leaving them with a trusted neighbour.

Keep your home insurance up to date
